Digital Mammography
Mammography is a special x-ray examination of the breast that uses a low dose x-ray system. The exam is performed by compressing the breast between two plates to capture the image of the breast tissue. The breast is compressed to increase image quality and lower the exposure to radiation. At least two images are taken of each breast. We believe that a woman should never miss her annual exam due to fear of pain or discomfort. Able Imaging is a certified Softer Mammogram Provider, a distinction awarded only to an elite group of heathcare facilities that offer MammoPad as a standard of care. The FDA cleared, single use, foam cushion creates a softer, warmer and more comfortable mammogram.
There are two types of mammograms - a Screening Mammogram and a Diagnostic Mammogram. Screening mammograms are used as a tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms. The goal is to detect cancer when it is still too small to be felt by a woman or her physician. Screening Mammograms are recommended every year once you reach 40 years of age. In some instances, your physician may recommend beginning screening mammography before age 40 if there is a strong family history of breast cancer. A Diagnostic Mammogram is advised for anyone who notices any changes in their breast like a lump or hardening when palpating the breast or armpit or has had an abnormality found during a screening mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram may require additional images to be taken of the areas of concern.
Computer Aided Detection, or CAD, is performed on all mammograms. CAD is a sophisticated computer program that applies a “second look” at all images. The program scans the images and highlights any potentially suspicious areas. The Radiologist reviews the marked areas again to determine if further analysis is needed. CAD is like having a second set of trained eyes reviewing your study.
While standard film mammography is still a sound and reliable exam, Digital Mammography, also called Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM), offers a new ability to process and view images. Much like a digital photo the images appear within seconds and can be manipulated by the Radiologist. This results in a shorter exam time for you and greater flexibility for the Radiologist interpreting the images.
Benefits of Digital Mammography
- Up to 40% less radiation dose over standard film mammography
- Fewer callbacks or retakes for additional images
- Less time for you as the images are seen quickly
- Images can be manipulated for a more accurate diagnoses
- More efficient access to mammograms as they can be electronically accessed by your physician or printed to film
Your mammogram results will be mailed to you and your physician will receive a written report.
Able Imaging is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and certified by the U.S. Department of Health & Senior Services Food and Drug Administration.
